![]() dirty treads makes me think it's an all-terrain but much less aggressive than #6, like a racing all terrain for a rally car or something. ![]() ?: I'm not really sure what kind of tire this one is to be honest. harder rubber compounds more appropriate for warm weather give better wear and mileage. only thing these treads should be clearing is water in the rain. outside of aesthetic reasons for period correct classics they're rarely used on road nowadays there are a handful of use cases that bias ply can still be preferable: large drag slicks, super swampers, and farm tires are often bias-ply. Sidewalls are thicker than radial tires so they're more cut and puncture resistant than radial tires. in general a worse choice all around at speed than radial tires. more prone to overheating, worse handling and feedback, worse fuel economy, wears faster. stiffer, less comfortable ride than radial. less ideal in winter than snow tires but much better than mud or summer tiresīias ply: the way tires used to be made. much better on road handling than mud tires and more than adequate for less extreme off roading. smaller, less aggressive treads, toned down side wall protection, and more routes for water to flow out in wet weather. they get the job done year round for less money, but you get what you pay forĪll terrains: a further step down in off road performance from mud tires. a middle ground for areas with sporadic winters where a dedicated snow tire might not be necessary all winter. snow on snow has better traction than rubber on snow, so holding a layer to the tire is ideal.Īll seasons: not as good as winter tires in snow and not as good as summer tires in rain and warm weather. narrower gaps between lugs than mud tires to hold snow, vs large gaps to clear mud. Winter tires: soft rubber compounds, lots of siping (small slits cut along the tread) for 'biting edges' on ice and hard snow. the blocky treads don't clear water as well as normal street tires in wet weather same general features as the swampers in a toned down, less aggressive package. Mud tires: a step down from swampers but the best road legal tire for off road performance. terrible on road and high speed performance designed to handle very low tire pressures to better conform to the terrain. lugs continue onto some of the sidewall for added protection and traction at all angles. Super swampers: the beefiest of off road tires, not always street legal, very thick lugs and deep treads to clear mud and grab loose ground for maximum traction. maximum rubber contacting the ground for max grip in dry conditions, no thought given to clearing water in wet conditions with these purpose built tires Going left to right, row by row in order:ĭrag/racing slicks: purely for racing, not street legal having no tread. Just eyeballing them, anyone else feel free to correct me but here's what I can tell visually.
